Clinicians working in correctional, detention, forensic, and other institutional settings with high-risk populations face a hard question at intake, often under time pressure: is this behavior a sign of criminogenic risk, or a trauma or stress response? The question is hardest when the person is a Spanish speaker assessed through translated forms or an interpreter. This 90-minute live session brings together two perspectives. Dr. Kirby Reutter, bilingual clinical psychologist and nationally recognized DBT trainer, presents trauma-focused clinical frameworks for institutional and immigration-related contexts. Ximena Scarpato, psychologist and criminology specialist with nine years of practice in Argentina's federal penitentiary service and more than 600 assessments of incarcerated individuals, presents how structured intake risk classification works in a national correctional system and where existing assessment approaches fall short for Spanish-speaking and trauma-exposed individuals.
